During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the global production and distribution of test kits reached unprecedented levels. In the United States alone, over 1 billion at-home test kits were procured for nationwide distribution. As the situation evolved, many of these kits became surplus, expiring without use, resulting in a unique waste management challenge.

The VLS Solution: Innovating Waste Management

At VLS Environmental Solutions, we identified a sustainable opportunity for disposing of these expired test kits. Approached about managing nearly 3,000 tons of expired kits stored in Memphis, TN, we leveraged our expertise in non-hazardous waste management to transform this potential environmental burden into a valuable resource.

We converted the expired test kits into Alternative Engineered Fuel (AEF) through our innovative Shredded Heat® program. This method ensured environmentally conscious disposal and provided a zero-ash, cost-effective energy source for cement kilns, replacing traditional fuels like coal and natural gas.

Environmental Impact and Benefits

The environmental impact of our intervention was significant. Processing the test kits through our specialized facilities in Gray Court, SC, and Brent, AL, resulted in an emissions offset of approximately 6,140 tons of CO2e, equivalent to the annual energy use of 801 homes, according to the EPA – a substantial carbon footprint reduction achievable through our methods.
