Since 2015, over 30 million square feet of data center space has been developed in the U.S., with Northern Virginia, known as “Data Center Alley,” housing a third of these facilities¹. This growth underscores the need for effective waste management solutions as essential components in construction projects.

Challenge

Maryland, following Virginia’s lead in data center expansion, faced a unique challenge during the construction of one such facility. High fluoride levels in groundwater wastewater, unearthed during drilling, presented treatment hurdles due to elevated pH levels that prevented on-site processing. Recognizing the complexity of the situation, the project managers enlisted VLS Environmental Solutions to leverage our Baltimore Industrial Services team’s expertise in advanced wastewater treatment and disposal.

Solution

Our Baltimore facility, equipped with state-of-the-art three-stage air flotation technology, can handle up to 50,000 gallons of wastewater daily. Over eight months, nearly 1,000,000 gallons were processed, adhering to top-tier safety standards. The process involved seamless transportation, treatment, and disposal, ensuring compliance and environmental safety.

Beyond processing, VLS provided critical on-site services. Our team performed confined space cleaning of Frac tanks, managed solid waste through expert roll-off operations, and executed sediment drainage, thus preventing environmental risks and ensuring regulatory compliance.
